The magnificent luxury safari lodges of Welgevonden Game Reserve are an easy 2.5-hour drive from Johannesburg (or a 45-minute charter flight from OR Tambo International Airport).

The Welgevonden Safari Lodges (Welgevonden Game Reserve) is a 36,000-hectare private game reserve in the Waterberg District of the Limpopo Province of South Africa.

The Welgevonden Reserve is nestled within the internationally recognised UNESCO Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, known for its sustainable conservation.

Aptly, Welgevonden translates as “well found” from the Dutch word.

This majestic reserve changes at every opportunity, offering breathtaking views of the untouched South African wilderness to personalized memories that will last a lifetime.

Accommodation at Welgevonden Safari Lodges:

What to Pack for your Safari in the Welgevonden Game Reserve:

Going on a safari holiday in South Africa is the highlight for many a visitor to our beautiful country.

Below is a list of some safari holiday essentials.

What to Wear on Safari in South Africa.

  • Hat & Sunglasses – safari during the summer months can be hot and sticky.
  • Comfortable Clothing (think layering as early morning safaris can be freezing at first and once the sun is out can get hot). Similarly, the afternoon/evening game drives can be pleasant at first, and after the sun sets, it can get very cold fast.
  • Neutral shades to blend into your environment.
  • Sturdy footwear – especially if your safari lodge also offers walking safaris.
  • Long Trousers – for the cold and the insects.

What to Pack for your Safari in South Africa:

  • Camera to capture the highlights of your South African safari holiday.
  • Sunblock – summers can be harsh in South Africa.
  • Binoculars – although the lodge will have a pair or two in your 4×4 safari vehicle.
  • Prescription Medication – Although medical evacuation is possible, you are hours away from any doctors or hospitals, so make sure to stock up.
  • Day Bag / Carry Bag for water, camera, jacket, etc.

On Safari at Welgevonden Safari Lodges.

A Big 5 safari is the highlight for many guests to South Africa and an authentic Big 5 safari in malaria-free conditions does not get any better than right here in Welgevonden.

The Welgevonden Reserve is home to more than 65 mammal species.

While these include the famous Big 5, it is the rare and unusual species like cheetah, brown hyena, caracal, aardwolf, and aardvark that make game drives exceptionally exciting.

At the same time, the restricted number of vehicles allowed in the reserve and the fact that the animals have never been hunted, means that they remain largely unfazed by human proximity, allowing for particularly close and personal encounters.

How to get to Welgevonden Safari Lodges:

Welgevonden is a 2.5-hour drive from Johannesburg (a little less from Pretoria).

There are two airstrips in Welgevonden (a 45-minute flight from Johannesburg).

There is also helipad access.

Upon arrival at the Welgevonden Main Gate, no private vehicles are allowed inside the reserve – this helps minimize human impact – your lodge will collect you and transfer you to your accommodation.
